Damage Effects

Damage can result in three effects: Shaken, Wounds and Incapacitation.

Shaken

A simple Success (0-3 points over Toughness) the target is Shaken. Shaken means the target is rattled, distracted, or in momentary shock. To recover from being Shaken a character must make a Spirit roll or spend a Bennie.

Spirit Roll

On their turn a character may make a Spirit roll (Target Number: 4 after negative/positive modifications)

  • Failure: Remain Shaken
  • Success: No longer Shaken but is unable to take any action except free actions.
  • Raise: No longer Shaken and may act normally.

Spend a Benny

If a character spends a Benny to remove their Shaken status they make act immediately, as if they made a successful Spirit roll. A Benny may be used at any time to remove the Shaken status.

Wounds

Every Raise on a character that is not shaken causes a Wound. A Success against a Shaken character also generates a Wound. Wounded Extras are immediately removed from the game and are considered Incapacitated. Wild Cards are able to take three Wounds before they are considered Incapacitated. Wilds Cards can never have more than three Wounds.

Extras are easier to kill than Wild Cards, which is why a simple Success on a Shaken character (both Extras and Wild Cards) will cause a Wound. Where Wild Cards and Extras differ is that Wild Cards can take up to three Wounds before they are Incapacitated. So, if an Extra is Shaken and takes and is hit again with a simple Success they are Incapacitated and off of the table. On the other hand, if a Wild Card is Shaken and is hit by a Success they will take a Wound, but if they are hit with a single Raise it is still only one Wound. If they are hit with two Raises though they would take a second Wound to go along with the first Wound they received.

How Wounds are Calculated

Negative modifiers for Wounds can never go past -3. That does not mean that you cannot take more than three Wounds. If a character is not Shaken and hit with seven Raises over their Toughness for the purpose of their Soak roll they would need six Raises on a Vigor roll to Soak all of their Wounds.
